The Power Of Storytelling In Marketing
Everyone loves a good story.
From our days of sitting crossed legged on the reading rug in class, we’ve been wired to love hearing tales of triumph. The same goes for us as adults in the business world. We’re always curious about how people got to where they are, how they’re different, and how we can find a connection to the characters in a story.
At the core of marketing, you’re telling your story to connect with potential consumers, and we can’t underestimate the power of a great story in branding a business. What product or service are you providing consumers that can improve their quality of life, make their day easier, or teach them something that they may not have known previously? This is the story that you’re sharing through marketing.
As you begin this process, there are a few things to consider:
- Who is it that you want to hear the story you’re trying to tell? You can’t please ‘em all, and you shouldn’t try to. Be authentic to yourself and your core audience base. People can sniff a fake from a mile away, and when you try to be everything to all people, you end up being nothing to anyone.
- Don’t be afraid to lift the veil and share your why. Every business has a unique story of how it came to be and yours is no different. Your why may be something that someone can resonate with. It can create a connection point with a potential consumer, and most importantly, it’s memorable.
- What’s in it for the consumer? I hesitate to say price because those who are seeking products based on price have a hard time establishing allegiance to any company as they’ll always be looking for where the lowest price point is. Anyone ever tried Groupon? How many of those customers came back after using their significantly discounted deal? We live and we learn. Think of it from a consumer perspective of what would make you choose your business over others- and tell that story consistently across your marketing efforts.
Great marketing is like a beautiful tapestry- weaving your story for your potential customers in the spaces they’re likely to see it. What’s the story you’re going to tell?
