“When it comes to making an impact as a business leader, it really boils down to how well that person can tell their business story."

Mastering Media Training: Critical Skills for Business Leaders in the Digital Age

According to Patranya Bhoolsuwan, a Henderson-based media trainer & strategist, she said effective storytelling can be an overlooked skill-set for many new entrepreneurs, and even veteran business owners. Bhoolsuwan currently conducts free monthly media training workshops at the College of Southern Nevada, Cheyenne Campus. This workshop is among a number of free resources being offered by NV Grow, a State of Nevada initiative customized to assist existing businesses in Southern Nevada thrive and grow.

“I love seeing entrepreneurs, small business owners and even non-profit leaders come to our classes with so much passion to get the word out about the work that they do,” said Bhoolsuwan. “The challenge for many of these business owners, however, is how to stand out from the pack. Mastering the art of business storytelling is not always easy. I now use my experience as a former TV journalist to help people tell their stories by using the 3 C’s."

The 3 C’s, according to Bhoolsuwan, are “clear”, “concise” and “compelling. She said as a news reporter, she had very little time to convey the key points of a news story during a newscast. A typical TV broadcast story is no longer than one minute and 45 seconds, so over the years, Bhoolsuwan learned how to tell stories in a clear and concise manner while keeping the content compelling to get viewers to tune in. She said business owners should "think like a reporter" and  do the same when they are showcasing their expertise in their respective industries.

“Media training can equip business leaders with the necessary skills to craft compelling messages, whether it be on their website, social media platforms, branding videos, etc.” said Bhoolsuwan. “When they have a story that stands out, that in turn leverages opportunities for interviews and speaking engagements in their community. These storytelling opportunities can bring more attention to a business and boost their chances to grow their visibility and of course, their bottomline”.
