Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican, San Martín Campus Honored with Bronze Award for Heart Failure Care

Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican’s San Martín campus has received the Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure Bronze Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Foundation’s secondary prevention guidelines for the treatment of patients with heart failure.

Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure is a quality improvement program that helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure patients. Launched in 2005, numerous published studies have demonstrated the program’s success in achieving patient outcome improvements, including reductions in 30-day readmissions.  READ MORE


WGU Nevada to Recognize More than 200 Graduates at Inaugural Commencement

WGU Nevada, the online, nonprofit university established 11 months ago, will hold its first commencement on Saturday, May 21. The event will honor 218 graduates who have completed their bachelor’s or master’s degrees in one of four disciplines: business, K–12 teacher education, information technology, and health professions, including nursing.

The ceremony will take place at 9:45 a.m. at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas Resort & Spa, 1610 Lake Las Vegas Parkway in Henderson. In addition to celebrating its graduates, the university will also mark another exciting milestone at the event: surpassing 1,600 currently enrolled students, an increase of 78% over Western Governors University’s enrollment in Nevada in June 2015—when the state and WGU formed a partnership to create WGU Nevada.  READ MORE

Auditor Lauren Carpenter Rejoins PBTK

Piercy Bowler Taylor & Kern (PBTK), a full-service accounting firm, welcomes Lauren Carpenter, MBA back to the firm as a Senior Associate in the audit department, focusing primarily on 401(k) audits.

Carpenter joined PBTK in August 2012 and left for a short while to pursue an opportunity with a private company.

“I came back to PBTK because of the people,” Carpenter said. “The professionals at PBTK are amazing to work with and I learn so much from them and our clients.”

Carpenter is a Southern Utah University graduate who works with a wide range of clients including those in government, not-for-profit and hospitality. In addition to her work with 401(k) audits, she is involved in testing the effectiveness of internal controls relating to compliance with the Minimum Internal Control Standards instituted by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Bill Nelson Joins Helping Hands Board

Piercy Bowler Taylor & Kern (PBTK), a full-service accounting firm, announces that Shareholder Bill Nelson, CPA was appointed to the board of Helping Hands, a non-profit organization with the mission to provide free, assistive services to senior citizens in Southern Nevada.

In his role on the Helping Hands Board, Nelson will help the organization raise funds and manage its efforts to help local seniors maintain their dignity and independence while improving health and daily living.

Nelson is extensively involved in all areas of accounting and auditing for the firm, mainly for gaming, real estate and construction clients. He is one of the few accounting professionals in Las Vegas to work with SEC clients. Nelson also assists with fraud examinations and has helped identify the perpetrator of fraud and determined loss amounts in multiple fraud issues. In addition, he helps his clients with internal controls and regulations to prevent occupational fraud.

Nelson has taught principles of accounting at the Community College of Southern Nevada, and has been discussion leader on several continuing professional education topics. He is active in the community participating in several youth sports programs and boy scouting.

Cox Business Survey Shows Overwhelming Consumer Support for Small Businesses

Consumers’ patronage of small businesses extends beyond Small Business Week. According to the 2016 Cox Consumer Pulse on Small Businesses, 90 percent of U.S. consumers frequent small businesses at least once a week. Moreover, 42 percent are shopping small three or more times a week, according to the survey findings released today.

While convenience and customer service attract consumers to small businesses, 63 percent simply feel a need to support local entrepreneurs. For many, their collective sense of loyalty to businesses in their communities may stem from seeing a lack of governmental support. In fact, 77 percent of consumers feel the federal government does not do enough to promote small business growth on a national level. However, when asked which presidential candidate is most likely to support legislation that provides more opportunity to small businesses, Donald Trump won the vote.  READ MORE


Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican Receives $36,654 from the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® for Mammograms and Ultrasounds

The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® recently granted $36,654 to Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican’s R.E.D. Rose (Responsible Early Detection) program to pay for mammograms and ultrasounds for under- and uninsured women.

“Southern Nevada ranks among the highest in the nation for under- and uninsured individuals,” said Brian Brannman, senior vice president of Dignity Health Nevada. “The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s donation will be instrumental in helping us provide much-needed clinical services for this target population. Burke Construction Group, Inc. receives Wisdom of Age Award

Nevada Business Magazine held their 6th Annual Family Owned Business Awards at the Springs Preserve where Burke Construction Group, Inc. was honored with the Wisdom of Age Award. The award recognizes businesses in operation for over 25 years who have demonstrated exceptional strength in their longevity.

Burke Construction Group, Inc, was originally founded in 1984 by Tim Burke who passed away in 2002. The business is run today by Kevin Burke, his brother, who took over as President and CEO in 2000. Kevin said he is "proud to carry on Tim's vision to build a contracting firm that exceeds client expectations." Now licensed or registered in 26 states, Kevin along with his nephews, Austin and Conner, hope to continue that growth.  READ MORE
